BHACDI Initiative implements and supports community-focused interventions that address cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, education, and resilience-building across African communities.
Our projects are designed to respond to urgent community needs while strengthening long-term systems for sustainable development.
The Niger State Library in Minna serves as an important cultural and intellectual resource for writers, researchers, students, and the wider community. In April 2025, the facility was severely damaged by a windstorm, resulting in the loss of roofing structures, windows, and doors. This exposed thousands of archival materials to environmental damage and security risks.
Many of these materials include indigenous literature and oral history records in Hausa, Gbagyi, and Nupe languages, alongside historical documents dating back to the 1960s.
The ongoing intervention focuses on the emergency safeguarding and stabilization of at-risk heritage materials and partial restoration of the facility.
Key activities include:
Emergency evacuation and stabilization of vulnerable documents
Temporary relocation of materials to a controlled environment for preservation
Structural stabilization of damaged sections of the library building
Replacement of broken windows, doors, and installation of temporary security measures
Drying and protection of partially affected archival materials
Stakeholder engagement with cultural and library authorities
Protection of endangered cultural and historical materials
Reduced risk of permanent loss of indigenous knowledge
Improved security and structural stability of the facility
Strengthened awareness of heritage preservation needs
This intervention is implemented in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and development partners to safeguard cultural heritage and strengthen community access to knowledge resources.
